DHCP Usage

I don't think anybody reads this blog, but...

If anybody is reading (Hello? Is this thing on?) I have a question... How extensive is your use of DHCP? I'm slowly migrating almost every network device to statically assigned DHCP, including servers. Do you use DHCP for servers and other fixed devices?

Just wonderin'...

  1. I know this is an old post of yours, however, I wanted to give my opinion.

Servers should have static IPs unless you can think of an incredibly good reason for them to be DYNAMIC.

Workstations should be DHCP unless you can think of an incredibly good reason for them to be STATIC.

Out of curiosity, I would be interested to know why you would transition all devices to a static IP.

  2. I ended up not using DHCP for most devices on my network... However, I still have static DHCP entries for all of them. This is mostly for the kickstart installs. I don't know why, but I just like to have the computer start off with it's correct hostname and IP address.

Thanks for stopping by and taking time to leave a comment!
